Overview
The glucose infusion rate (GIR) calculator allows the clinician to set the total intravenous fluid intake and desired GIR and, if all currently running infusions do not reach the desired GIR, the calculator will recommend rate of D25W to reach the desired GIR.
Assuming all the infusions are Y-ed into the one IV, the calculator will then calculate the IV Y-site concentrations of glucose (% ), sodium, potassium and chloride (mmol/L) and associated osmolality. Generally it is advised to avoid running peripheral IVs at glucose concentrations of > 12.5%.
This calculator can assist in avoiding a pharmacy after hours call back to make special IV bags of non-standard glucose concentrations.
