Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) Guideline
Overview
Subarachnoid hemorrhage does occur in children, although the etiology is often different from adults where 85% of cases are due to aneurysm rupture. In children 50% of SAH cases are due to arteriovenous malformations, with trauma, tumours and infectious aneurysm rupture the next most common aetiologies. Prevention and treatment of secondary vasospasm follows adult guidelines due to the lack of pediatric specific research, hence this guideline is helpful. Reversible cerebral vasospasm syndrome (RCVS) and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) are illnesses also causing cerebral vasospasm.
